Dimmer Switch Installation

Light is the part of this trade that changes how a room feels. Lighting is the part of electrical work people actually see every day, so layout matters as much as the wiring behind it.

Dimmer Switch Installation in O’Fallon and across St. Charles, St. Louis, Lincoln and Warren counties.

Owner-operated: the person who answers the phone is the person who measures it.

What this work actually involves

Boxes are set where the fixture needs them rather than where the joist happens to be, which is the difference between a clean ceiling and a patched one.

Nothing gets quoted off a description. The reading comes first, because a symptom has several possible causes at very different prices and only a measurement separates them.

Where a permit and an inspection are required they happen, and the site is left ready for them. One person carries the job from the first call to the final test.

When people call about this

  • Dark corners no lamp fixes
  • LEDs that flicker on a dimmer
  • A remodel with no lighting plan
  • Fixtures older than the wiring

Why people choose Clint for it

A one-person shop cannot be in two places at once, so you get a real date instead of a window. What you also get is the same person every time.

Seventeen years in the trade, four of them on his own, 5.0 from 94 Google reviews and an A+ BBB accreditation since 2022.

Where this is done

Thirty towns across five jurisdictions, worked out of O’Fallon. The housing stock and the inspection process both change as you move across them.

Switching as a layout decision

Switch legs decide whether a room is pleasant to walk into. The useful question is which lights you want from the door, which from the far side, and what you want on at two in the morning.

Three-way and four-way switching answers that, and it is cheap to plan and expensive to retrofit. Labeled legs at the panel mean the next electrician understands the intent.

Dimming, drivers and flicker

LED flicker is a dimmer problem almost every time. An LED driver needs a dimmer rated for electronic low voltage or for LED loads, and a trailing-edge dimmer behaves very differently from the old incandescent one it replaced.

Minimum load matters too. Some dimmers need more wattage on the circuit than three LED cans provide, which is exactly when a brand new install buzzes.

Switches, three-ways, and the ones wired backwards

A switch that controls nothing, a three-way that only works from one end, or a light that is dim at one switch position is almost always a travellers problem at the box rather than a bad device.

The legs get identified and re-terminated properly. Devices go in with the conductors under the screws rather than backstabbed, which is the failure that shows up a decade later as an intermittent.

Why an LED flickers on an old dimmer

A dimmer built for incandescent load expects a filament’s draw. LEDs present far less, so the low end of the range becomes flicker, buzz or a dead zone, and the lamps get blamed.

The fix is matching the dimmer to the specific fixtures and checking the minimum load. Done right an LED dims smoothly to the bottom, and that is tested on the circuit before it is left.

Why the diagnosis comes before the quote

A symptom has several possible causes with very different prices, and the only thing that separates them is a measurement. Quoting the expensive one covers the risk; quoting the cheap one and finding the expensive one mid-job is worse.

So the reading happens first, you are told what it says, and then the work is scoped to it. Where the honest answer is the small repair, that is the answer you get, even when the larger job pays better.

“Infinity came out for same day service after an electric line had been cut in my yard. He was able to locate and correct it very quickly, eliminating any risk of injury or additional power outage.”

How the visit goes

  1. The call

Which room, what is wrong with it now, and how the room is used in the evening.

  2. The measurement

Ceiling height, joist direction and position, existing switch legs, and what the circuit already carries.

  3. The finding

A layout with spacing that works, a switching plan, and a dimmer matched to the fixtures you have chosen.

  4. The work

Boxes set where the fixtures need them, remodel housings cut in from below on finished ceilings, dimming tested on every circuit before the ladder comes down.

What the job includes

  • Layout set from ceiling height and beam angle before any hole is cut
  • Boxes placed where the fixture needs them
  • Dimmers matched to the drivers so nothing flickers
  • Switch legs planned around how the room is used
  • Fixtures installed, aimed and tested
  • Old fixtures removed and the openings made good

What it does not

  • Supplying decorative fixtures, unless you ask
  • Painting after a ceiling patch
  • Drapery and blind hardware

If the fix belongs to another trade, you get the name of one rather than a price from this one. Finished work is in the gallery. To book, pick a day.

Dimmer Switch Installation across the metro

Where the house is changes what the work involves. Clint works out of O’Fallon across five jurisdictions, and the same service means different work in each.

St. Louis City

St. Louis City is century brick with shared walls and basement panels that have been added to five times. Code corrections and occupancy inspections are the common call.

Lincoln County

Lincoln County is rural service: longer drops, well pumps and septic loads that city panels never carry, and outages that make backup power a practical purchase rather than a luxury.

Warren County

Warren County mixes newer builds with older farm properties, and generator work comes up more often there than it does in town.

County by county coverage is on the service areas page.

Questions worth asking first.

Why do my LEDs flicker?

Almost always the dimmer, not the bulbs. LED drivers need a dimmer rated for them, and matching the two fixes it without replacing fixtures.

Can recessed lights go in a finished ceiling?

Usually yes, with remodel-rated housings cut in from below. Joist position decides spacing, which is why the layout gets set before any hole is cut.

How many recessed lights does a room need?

Spacing comes off the ceiling height, and joist direction decides where a housing can physically sit. The layout gets drawn before anything is cut rather than counted off a rule of thumb.

Are you licensed and insured?

Licensed, bonded and insured, with workers compensation coverage, and accredited A+ with the BBB since 2022.

Where do you work?

Out of O’Fallon across St. Charles County, St. Louis County, St. Louis City, and Lincoln and Warren counties, roughly a fifty mile radius.
