Smart Lighting Installation

Cameras and doorbells need power planned, not improvised. Smart devices are easy to buy and easy to install badly, usually because the box behind them was never wired for one.

Smart Lighting Installation in O’Fallon and across St. Charles, St. Louis, Lincoln and Warren counties.

Owner-operated by Clint Ehman. Seventeen years in the trade, four of them running his own shop.

What this work actually involves

The box gets checked for a neutral and for depth before a device is ordered, which avoids the usual return trip.

A number follows a measurement here, never a guess. You get told what the reading was and what it means before any work is agreed, including on the days when the answer is one loose connection.

Permitted and inspected where the address requires it, labeled at the panel, and done by the person who diagnosed it rather than handed down a chain.

When people call about this

  • Smart switches that drop offline
  • A doorbell with no transformer
  • Cameras on extension cords
  • A remodel wanting structured wiring

Why people choose Clint for it

There is no dispatcher taking a description for someone else to act on, and no commission riding on what the visit totals. The person who measures it is the person who fixes it.

Where this is done

O’Fallon first, then the rest of St. Charles County, St. Louis County and the City, and out to Lincoln and Warren. If you are just past that, the call is still worth making.

Box depth, which nobody checks until it is too late

Smart devices are deeper and bulkier than what they replace, and the existing box is frequently too shallow once the conductors are folded back in. Forcing it is how terminations get stressed.

Depth and box fill get checked first, and where a box is too small the honest answer is a deeper box rather than a device crammed in.

The neutral problem

Most smart switches need a constant neutral to power their own electronics, and a great many older switch boxes were wired with only a switch leg. That single fact decides which devices can physically go in a given wall.

Where there is no neutral, the options are a device designed to work without one, a new run, or a different control point. Which applies gets established at the box rather than guessed from the product page.

Smart lighting that still works offline

The question that decides the install is what happens when the internet is down. Devices that keep local control keep working; cloud-only devices become a wall plate.

Neutral availability and box depth decide which devices can physically go in. It gets tested on your network rather than at the wall.

What is worth automating and what is not

Lights on a schedule, a thermostat that knows when the house is empty, and a lock you can check from elsewhere all earn their keep. Novelty devices get used for a month.

Deciding that before the wiring is planned keeps the install small and the result something that is still in use in three years.

What the price actually depends on

Three things move the number on almost every job: how far the run has to travel and what it passes through, whether the existing panel has space and the service has capacity, and whether the municipality wants a permit and an inspection. None of those is visible from the phone call, which is why the measurement comes before the quote.

What does not move it is urgency theatre. There is no inflated figure waiting to be discounted, and no bundle built so the thing you called about cannot be bought on its own.

“Clint did an excellent job installing two bathroom exhaust fans. He installed high-quality fans that were far superior to the ones I had purchased from a big box store. I highly recommend his services.”

How the visit goes

  1. The call

Which device, which wall, and what it needs to do when the internet is down.

  2. The measurement

Whether the box has a neutral and the depth for the device, what the existing load is, and the signal at that wall.

  3. The finding

Which devices will actually work there. Sometimes the answer is a different device, sometimes a transformer, sometimes a new run.

  4. The work

Wired for local control, runs labeled at both ends, tested on your network rather than at the wall.

What the job includes

  • Checking the box for a neutral and for depth before anything is ordered
  • Devices wired so they work when the internet does not
  • Runs labeled at both ends and documented
  • Transformers where an older house lacks one
  • Low-voltage terminated in a panel, not a knot
  • Testing on the actual network, not just at the wall

What it does not

  • Ongoing app and account support
  • Internet service and router configuration
  • Subscription cameras we have not installed

Anything that is not an electrical problem gets identified as such and handed on. See finished work, or say what the house is doing.

Smart Lighting Installation across the metro

The same job is not the same job in every part of this metro. Same trade across five jurisdictions out of O’Fallon, with a different inspection process in each.

Lincoln County

Rural properties where the panel is fine and the two hundred foot run to the barn is the actual job.

Warren County

Newer builds beside older farm properties, with outbuildings and well pumps that town panels never see.

St. Charles County

The subdivisions here were wired correctly for what houses drew at the time. A charger, a heat pump and a finished lower level later, the arithmetic no longer works out.

The full footprint, county by county, is on the service areas page.

Questions worth asking first.

Can you wire a doorbell camera?

Yes, including the transformer most older houses lack. A hardwired doorbell keeps working when the batteries and the Wi-Fi do not.

Will my smart switches work if the internet goes down?

Devices that keep local control will. Cloud-only devices become a wall plate, which is worth knowing before they go in.

Does my box have room for a smart device?

Smart devices are deeper than what they replace, so box depth and fill get checked first. Sometimes the honest answer is a different device.

Do you pull permits?

Where the municipality requires one, yes, and the work is left ready for inspection with the panel labeled and junctions accessible. Requirements genuinely differ across this metro, which is why it is established per address rather than assumed.

How long have you been doing this?
